Globoke meta-fore

SDS PR:

sredo 8. septembra, ob 18.00 uri, v Kinu Šiška.

Pogovor z avtorjem knjige, Georgeom Monbiotom, bo vodil Luka Omladič

.

Among the Flutterers

Aja, tudi o knjigi The Pope Is Not Gay Angela Quattroccha.

The shame an adolescent felt about being gay in those years should not be underestimated; the feeling that you were less than worthy, that if people found out the truth about you they would despise you, went deep into your soul. This was another reason to become a priest. You could change your own powerlessness into power. As a priest, you would be admired and looked up to, you would spend your life – as so many Catholic priests have indeed spent their lives – doing good and being good. And being seen to be good, being needed by the sick and the dying, being wanted to officiate at weddings and baptisms and funerals, saying the sacred words which would mean so much to the congregation, all this would offer you a fulfilled and fulfilling life. Becoming a priest solved not only the outward problem of forbidden and unmentionable sexual urges, but, perhaps more important, offered a solution to the problem of having a shameful identity that lurked in the deepest recesses of the self.

Gay liberation made its way, strangely, into the seminaries. I have a letter from a friend, an Irish writer, sent in response to a piece I wrote for this paper about the Ferns Report, describing his visit to an Irish seminary in the 1980s.[*] Since the Church was liberalising at that time, it would not have been unusual for writers to be invited to seminaries to speak. My friend had no intention of being shocking, or amusing. He spoke about literature, choosing the dullest subject for the seminarians. What he noticed among them, however, was anything but dull; and it surprised him greatly. He saw an immense amount of male fluttering; he listened as young candidates for the priesthood, boys from rural Ireland, attempted Wildean witticisms; he noticed them wearing specially tailored soutanes, moving around each other, excitedly, like a flock of girls. Here it was, and he was not the only one to witness it: ‘the takeover of the seminaries by homosexuals’.

Rational Sociopath

I believe that the “economic way of thinking,” as the textbooks have it, destroys the world we have in common, because that world is a world constructed in a normative, not a natural, space and rationality, as economists understand it, is inconsistent with, indeed makes nonsense of, the notion of normative authority. In effect, this point was made 30 years ago by Amartya Sen in “Rational Fools,” where he argued that while the economic conception of rationality can make sense of “sympathy,” – preference structures that made the utility of others part of the agent’s objective function – it cannot make sense of what Sen called “commitment,” which he defined as “counter-preferential choice.” The idea that we sometimes sacrifice something – lower our utility – to do what is right is absolutely inconsistent with rational choice. I don’t doubt that there are people who are well described as rational choosers – and more of them, unfortunately, than there would be had rational choice theory never been invented – but they are damaged humans, sociopaths. Free rape for every man, howdy!

But until the 1970s, marriage was actually an exception to the crime of rape. In every American state, a husband could rape his wife at will repeatedly. In 1975, South Dakota became the first state to enact a law against spousal rape. North Carolina was the last in 1993. In a majority of states, rape inside marriage is still treated as a less serious offense than rape outside it. So rather than protecting women against rape, old-fashioned marriage actually makes them more vulnerable to it.

Free murder, howdyX2!

During most of the period of idealized Douthat marriage, a husband who observed his wife in the act of adultery had a defense to the murder of the cheating wife or her lover. Not satisfied with the possibility of acquittal or a reduced sentence, several American states made the murder of an adulterer no crime at all. Women, however, could not invoke the same defense. Finally in the late 19th century, the states moved to a gender-neutral defense to a murder charge of “reasonable provocation” in the event of adultery. But it mostly still applied in cases of men killing their wives. When the United Kingdom finally repealed its adultery provocation defense in 2008, the Telegraph reported that it was the most common defense for the approximately 100 Brits a year who killed their wives.

The Damsels Demur

Delo&Co., vas ni mičkeno sram ob taki “urednici”?
